Candle Fire Prevention

While candles can be wonderful decorative accents for your residence (especially around the holidays), they also can occasionally create a dangerous situation – here are a few simple rules to follow to minimize the chances of an accidental fire occurring as the result of careless handling of a candle.

• Never carry or lean over a lit candle
• Never use a candle around any aerosol products like hairspray
• Never use candles where pets or children may accidentally knock them over
• Avoid using a candle near an open window as a draft may cause
uneven burning
• A wick that is not properly maintained will lead to excessive amounts of smoke. Keep wicks trimmed to 1/4-inch and be sure to remove wick trimmings from the candle as these may cause unwanted burning if let in place.

Following these simple guidelines will insure that the candles in your home provide only the light and scents you’re looking for in the days and weeks to come.
