Home Inventory Checklist Time!

H&K Inventory Checklist

When purchasing your home insurance, the agent and carrier have software that can calculate the replacement value of your home. It evaluates the type of home you own, the square footage, as well as interior features and finishes. What the software cannot calculate, is the value of the personal property within your home. With electronics, furniture, clothing, valuable papers, and many other items within the home, it can add up to a large sum of money.

At H&K Insurance, we advise that you keep a home inventory of major items within your home, this can help you calculate how much coverage you should maintain and will also help if a claim occurs to tabulate the total loss. The list can be categorized by room, type of item, collection, or other relevant criteria. Keeping receipts on substantial purchases, furniture, computers, televisions will also help speed along the claims process.

A home inventory list should include as much of the following information for the items as possible:

  • Description of the item
  • Make, model or serial number if applicable
  • Appraisals or cost at the time of purchase
  • Where the item was purchased
  • Date of purchase
  • Receipts or photos in an attachment, if relevant
  • Estimated replacement cost if you bought today

Please note, valuable antiques or one-of-a-kind items, such as collectables, should be discussed with your insurance agent on how to itemize them or if they would be covered if a claim occurs. Talking with your insurance agent of any personal property coverage caps will prompt you to potentially schedule these types of items and, most notably, jewelry.

H&K’s experienced agents are standing by to help you navigate the process of making sure you have the proper coverage. A smooth and fair claim process is ideal for you, the client, and the agent as well.
