Dangers of Distracted Driving

dangers distracted drivingWe see it almost every day. The masses are stopped at stop lights, checking their phones, putting on makeup, eating food, or daydreaming about some beach they much rather be on.

In 2015 alone, distracted driving accounted for 391,000 injuries and 3,477 deaths. Per day, approximately 660,000 people use their cell phones while driving.

These staggering numbers signify an epidemic where more and more people are driving impaired or on “autopilot,” instead of being alert and attentive.

Distracted Driving Laws in Massachusetts

On September 30, 2010, the RMV implemented a new Safe Driver Law designed to curb distracted driving with punitive enforcement.

Junior operators (motorists under 18) are banned from using any electronic device whatsoever in their vehicle. If caught, they face a $100 fine, 60-day license suspension, and mandatory attitudinal retraining course.

Operators over 18 are banned from texting while driving. This civil offense carries no insurance surcharge points, but you will have to pay a fine of $100.

Law enforcement periodically runs sting operations to catch distracted drivers and raise awareness about the importance of maintaining focus behind the wheel.

Ways to Curb Distracted Driving

Get Adequate Sleep – It’s easier for your mind and eyes to wander when you’re fatigued. Getting a solid 8 hours a night helps in staying alert and maintain focus behind the wheel.

Drink Coffee – A good caffeinated beverage can help awaken your brain before you make the morning commute.

Air Conditioner – Aiming the air conditioner vents at your face delivers a cool breeze that can shake you awake while driving.

Impact on Insurance

While both junior operator and adult violations of the Safe Driver Law won’t carry any surcharges, any car accident that results in injury as a result of mobile phone use carries stiff penalties that will affect your car insurance premium.

That surcharge will stick with you for six years and each SDIP point steepens your bill. If you have prior infractions, insurance companies may refuse to insure you based on risk.
