Do You Need Off-Premise Insurance?

A growing trend among patrons these days is having restaurants come to them as opposed to the other way around. Whether you’re primarily an off-premise restaurant or are looking to expand your services to be more competitive in the market, having insurance to protect yourself against possible liabilities is a must regardless of the situation.

Off-premise insurance can be broken down into three types of coverages:

Off-Premise Property Coverage: Can protect you while you are operating on another person’s property. If you are catering inside a reception hall and some drapes nearby catch fire, your policy can cover the cost of replacing those drapes.

Off-Premise Equipment Breakdown Coverage: Protects your equipment and supplies while they are in transit or in use at a location other than your restaurant. Say you are catering a wedding and have food stored at the off-site location. If the power trips, causing your heat lamps and hot boxes to malfunction, your off-premise equipment coverage cannot only compensate you for the damage to your equipment but also the food that went bad as a result of the malfunctioning equipment. The compensated amount can either directly replace the financial loss you incurred or it can go towards the repairs or replacement of items.

Depending on your policy specifications, coverage may also include mobile refrigerators, stoves, ovens, computer systems, and culinary supplies.

Off-Premise Liquor Liability: Serving alcohol off-premise carries the same amount of risk as serving at your restaurant. Off-premise liquor liability covers you should an event attendee get behind the wheel and crash into oncoming traffic. It also covers you should alcohol be a precursory activity to fighting at the event.
