Walloping the Northeast, Winter Storm Riley packed quite a punch along the coast, especially along the water where the towns of Scituate and Quincy were hit the most. Knocking out power for nearly half a million people, many are still reeling from the effects of this winter storm.
Winter Storm Riley caused significant damage by either flooding or falling trees. With winds surging 70 miles per hour, even the most strong-rooted of trees came down and landed on the roofs of homes. Along the coast, the high tides roared over the walls causing damage to flooring and furniture.
A standard homeowner’s policy covers damage caused by the following types of perils:
These are the named perils, many policies have what is called “open peril” coverage. Often this is mistakenly called “all-risk” coverage but there is not a policy in existence that has no exclusions. If you have your homeowner’s policy with H&K Insurance, please call or text your agent at 617-612-6500. To facilitate the claims process, take lots of pictures of the damage and send them to us. We will then reach out to the insurance company on your behalf and they will contact you about restoration.
Typically, an adjuster will come out, assess the damages, determine if there is coverage and compensate you the cost it will take to fix the covered loss if there is. This includes structural damage, the cost to hire a contractor to remove the fallen trees, the cost of a hotel if your home is inhabitable, and the cost to replace damaged personal property. If your neighbor’s tree fell on your home, you would have to report the damages under your own homeowner’s policy and not that of your neighbor’s. If the tree fell on your car, the claim will be under your auto insurance policy.
To notify us of damage to your home or vehicle, please fill out our property loss notice form or automobile notice form or call/text us at 617-612-6500. Stay safe everyone!
