Important Information About Ice Dams

I recently found a very informative post on a relevant topic for this time of year, especially with the weather we’ve had this season (and this week). If you’ve never experienced an ice dam before the odds of you having one this year are still very high. Check out this post for some very good explanation of the mechanics of an ice dam and how to prevent and treat them.

If you are already experiencing the cascading water from an ice dam you need to act right away. You need to call someone with experience (and insurance!) to help remedy the situation. Your insurance agent is a good source for such experts. Once you’ve stopped the flow of water, you now need to assess the damage. If you’ve had a large amount of water, you may need a restoration company to come in and dry things out for you – once again your insurance agent is a great source. If there has been a significant amount of damage from the leak and the remediation efforts, you’ll need to contact your insurance agent to report a loss and begin the rebuilding process. Hopefully you are already on top of things (not your roof!) and you will avoid the hassle that an ice dam can cause.
